Background to the Gresley A1 and A3 Class

The Gresley A3 Class originally started as the A1 Class with right hand drive. The pioneer locomotive was
No. 1470 (later 4470) Great Northern which was rebuilt
as the pioneer Thomson A1 Class in September 1945.
All the other Gresley A1 Class were later rebuilt as the A3 Class, along with further locomotives built as A3 Class, which all had left hand drive and other improvements.
